Open Noncomparative Trial of Oral Cefprozil for Acute Pharyngotonsillitis

Abstract
Purpose : Synthetic penicillin has been used in group A streptococcal infection such as acute pharyngotonsillitis. However, the rate of treatment failure in increasing because of ¥â-lactamase producing organisms. Recently oral cephalosporins are commonly used instead if traditionally used synthetic penicillins. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of oral cefprozil in acute pharyngotonsillitis.
Patients & Methods : Open noncomparative trial is composed of 10 days administration of oral cefprozil in the 36 patients of acute pharyngotonsillitis caused by bacterial infection. In case of 13 years old and over, single dose of 500mg of cefprozil tablet was administered a day, and in cases below 13years old, 15mg/kg/day of cepfrozil syrup. The efficacy was assessed by the rate of improvement in clinical symptoms and signs, and side effects were closely checked during follow-up.
Result : Twenty three cases of cure and eleven cases of improvement out of total 36 cases showed 94.4% of clinical response rate. The side effect was observed in two patients(5.6%)with mild and negligible diarrhea.
Conclusion : Cefprozil is effective and safe in the treatment of acute pharyngotonsillitis
